Mana Whey Fiji Coral Coast 7s champions First Light Taveuni players and officials were treated to a grand traditional welcome when they arrived in the island yesterday.

Mata ni Tikina o Cakaudrove Uluivau Tikonaivalu told SUNsports yesterday that it was proud moment for the people of Taveuni.

“A traditional cere was done to welcome the players and officials as soon as they got off the ferry,” he said.

“There were more than 500 people at the wharf to greet our sevens stars. Everybody in Taveuni joined in the celebration and it was a whole-day affair.”

Tikonaivalu said the team made their way to Somosomo to present their sevusevu and also hand over the title to the Tui Cakau Ratu Naiqama Lalabalavu.

“This is because before they left for Sigatoka, they went and present their, i-tatau to Ratu Naiqama and he gave them his blessings. From there the team moved to Welagi where the celebration took place.”

Tikonaivalu said the win has come at the right time after the destruction caused to the island by cyclone Winston.

“The  players are from the villages here and most of them are dalo and kava farmers. We’re proud of them and what they have achieved for us.”
