Yaqona thieves get suspended sentence

Three men from Seaqaqa on Monday were handed a suspended sentence of nine months’ imprisonment by the Labasa Magistrates Court for stealing yaqona.

Kalisita Posiano, Jope Loailagi and Nacanieli Vunisina were charged with one joint theft count. They appeared before Magistrate Cama Tuberi.

The court heard that the three men had illegally uprooted seven yaqona plants from another man’s farm in Seaqaqa last year.

The men, who were in a camp, went to the complainant’s farm, uprooted the plants, took it back to their farm, cleaned it and sold it at the Savusavu Market for $307.05.

Magistrate Tuberi warned the men not to re-offend for a period of two years or their nine months’ suspended sentence would be activated.
