A 35-year-old woman of Yako Settlement in Nadroga watched helplessly after a fire damaged a two-flat residential property she was living in.

The midday fire left nine people homeless yesterday.

Sangeeta Devi, a mother of three, had just finished her shower when she saw smoke in their flat and managed to escape safely.

“I was sick and was preparing to go to the hospital, when I came out of the bathroom and saw only black smoke,” she said.

“There was no smoke or fire as I made my way into the bathroom. I still cannot believe it.

“If I had spent more time in the bathroom, I’m not too sure what would have happened, but luckily I came out just in time.”

Ms Devi was alone in their flat. Her brother-in-law’s family were not at home.

She alerted her nephew, who lived nearby. He rushed to the scene and managed to save some household goods. However, the fire damaged their concrete and corrugated house.

“It all happened so fast. There is nothing left for us now,” Ms Devi said.

She said memories tied to the home went up in smoke.

The National Fire Authority (NFA) confirmed the incident happened at 12.55pm.

The Nadi Fire Station received an emergency call and immediately responded.

“Upon arrival at 1.05pm, the fire team saw the two flats made up of concrete, corrugated iron and timber fully engulfed in flames,” the NFA said in a statement.

“The fire team used deliveries of water from the fire trucks relayed from the fire hydrant in the area, to extinguish the fire.”

NFA investigation are underway to determine the cause of the fire.
