Previously some soldiers who had returned from tours of duty saw their hard earned savings dwindle till they had nothing left to fall back on.

Then, like most people, they would resort to commercial banks for loans.

A new initiative set up by a group of soldiers has suddenly lifted the spirits of these servicemen.

The glow on their faces last week at the Duke of Edinburgh Barracks in Lautoka was because of a new cooperative that would see a better future for their families.

The  96 participants were attending a Defensive Driving and Public Service Vehicles Course conducted by the Land Transport Authority in an effort to legalise their transport business.

The soldiers have registered the co-operative, Global Taxi and Tours Cooperative Limited, with bases in Lautoka, Nadi, Suva and tours around the island.

Secretary of the co-operative, Matia Masibuli said the course conducted was to help their drivers minimise fatalities on the roads.

Mr Masibuli thanked the Government and the Ministry of Labour for helping them start this co-operative.

The co-operative was hopeful that a special number plate would be issued for their vehicles which already have their stickers on.
