A 42-year-old mother in Wainibokasi was in shock yesterday after her two-bedroom house was destroyed by fire.

The Natavea Village, Vugalei native, Lydia Racule, said: “It was around 11am, I was preparing lunch for my family in the kitchen when all of a sudden I heard my son calling out that there is fire in his room.

“I quickly ran to my son’s room and his room was filled with black smoke.

“We then quickly ran outside. Luckily, my son ran outside after informing us about the fire,” she said.

Ms Racule said her husband was resting and her son was putting on his clothes after having his shower when the incident occurred.

“The fire had started from my son’s room, but I do not know how it started,” she said.

“Everything was completely destroyed in the fire within minutes in front of our eyes.”

Ms Racule was thankful no one got hurt and they safely managed to escape the blaze.

“I have been residing here with my family members for the last six years. This is our mataqali land,” she said.

“It was really painful to see how everything was completely destroyed in fire within few minutes.”

Ms Racule said they could not save any of their belongings.

When the Fiji Sun visited them yesterday, Ms Racule was in a state of shock, sitting outside and watching her house after it was destroyed.

“I am still thinking where I will go with my family and who will give us shelter,” she said.

National Fire Authority investigations are underway to determine the cause of the fire.
