A new centre has been set up to help 10 widows generate income to help their families.

The centre, referred to by Minister for Women, Children and Poverty Alleviation Mereseini Vuniwaqa, as a widow’s home, is located at in Ba.

Ms Vuniwaqa said this was a first for Fiji.

She said the Ministry would equip the group’s training centre.

She made the announcement while visiting the Lautoka Office for Golden Age Home as part of her official visits to key institutions in the Western Division yesterday.

“This widows’ home is a first for Fiji, that is a very exciting project that my ministry is supporting given their vision to empower women who are widows.

“We are looking at this kind of project with the Ministry. To empower them with skills so that they can come out and are able to contribute to the welfare of their family particularly after the loss of their breadwinner,” said Ms Vuniwaqa.

This widows live in their own homes, but are empowered at the training centre.

“This is part of the visit in the beginning of the year to see what challenges are on the ground and how we can address its challenges and the need for the institution to assist better in those areas where we are geared to achieving Government aims in various years.”

She said: “The visit has started from Korovou down looking at the challenges that we have had in the past year and seeing how we can assist them better in the delivery of the core services to the people.

“We are also visiting key institutions that fall under the umbrella of the ministry as well, this included  the Veilomani Boys home in Ba, St Minas Home in Nadi and Treasure Home.”
