A win against Ireland in the first game is crucial for the Telecom Fijiana team as the Women Sevens Series kicks off at Allianz Stadium today.

Head coach Iliesa Tanivula said a good start was vital to keep the momentum going for the side as they face Olympic champions Australia in their last pool game tonight.

Fiji plays Ireland at 2:14pm, Brazil at 4:56pm and Australia at 8pm.

“We got to have a good start to lay the platform for the rest of the games,” Tanivula said.

“Ireland is a good team and has been coached really well and we know what to expect because we played against them in Dubai.

“We’ve been learning a lot from our mistakes so we know what to work on.

“The girls have been nervous but really looking forward to the first game.

“It has been six long weeks and has been tough for the girls. We know what we are capable of because we finished fifth in Dubai in December and know we can do better.”

Asinate Savu will be making her return to the team and is the leading try-scorer for the team with 32 tries.

This will be her first appearance since the final round of the 2014-15 season due to injury.

“I am happy to be back in the team and I am really excited to get this opportunity,” Savu said.

“The girls have worked hard and I have worked hard to be here.

“I want to do well and want to help the girls achieve fourth place in Sydney.”
