Widow Feels ‘Lucky’ To Own Land

Life has never been easy for 73-year-old widow, Legalega Diana of Vakacegu settlement in Navua.
Her dream of legally owning a piece of land came true yesterday.
Ms Diana was among more than 60 families in Navua who received 99-year-lease notices from the Government.
“This is one of the glorious days in our lives,” said Ms Diana and her son, Avaiata Rarasea, 41, who were speechless after receiving their notice.
“I have been a widow for a few years now and life has never been easy for me. But today, I thank the Lord for this tremendous help from the Government,” she said.
Ms Diana added that it had never been easy for her because the cost of living was high and she did not have a good job.
“Now, I feel like the luckiest woman in the world.”
Her son, Mr Rarasea, said that ever since he was seven-years-old, they had been moving around Navua.
“We have been going around Navua and renting for over 30 years before we moved in to Vakacegu subdivision. Today, I can say that: Yes, we have our own land,” he said.
Mr Rarasea said they had approached authorities for electricity connection once but, since they did not have a land title, their request was rejected.
“Since we have the title now, our access for many services is much easier, even to the bank for loans,” he said.
Mr Rasea works for Heritage Fiji Limited and stays with his mother and two nieces.
“My next move now is to get a home loan from the bank and build a new house for us,” he said.
Prime Minister, Voreqe Bainimarama officiated the issuance of Approval Notices.
