The Prime Minister and Minister for Sugar Voreqe Bainimarama has allocated $0.5 million for fertiliser subsidy for sugarcane farmers of Rakiraki and Tavua.

These farmers were affected by the flood in the recent TDO4F.

They had therefore made a request to the Permanent Secretary for Sugar, Yogesh Karan to assist them in some way during his official visit to the area last month.

“So I had promised to them that once I finished my assessment, I would report to the Prime Minister, who is also the Minister for Sugar,” Mr Karan said.

“We have worked out how it is going to be done since there’s a formula which we will use so that through this we will see how many bags of fertiliser a farmer qualifies for.”

Mr Karan hopes that the farmers can make best use of this instant aid which has been granted upon their request.

“Farmers can contact our Ministry for Sugar and in consultation with Fiji Sugar Corporation we will make an assessment and disperse funds we have allocated,” Mr Karan said.

Farmers could enquire for the aid next week, he said.
