A 48-year-old school vice principal yesterday appeared at the Nasinu Magistrates Court for allegedly assaulting a student.

The matter was called before Magistrate Charles Ratakele.

Waisale Tavatuilagi’s bail application was denied as the matter was of public interest. There was a chance of interference since the victim and the witnesses are from the same school Tavatuilagi teaches at.

It is alleged that on January 27, Tavatuilagi assaulted a 14-year-old child.

Police Prosecutor Jiten Singh objected to bail on the grounds that the victim was in school uniform when the assault took place. There was a great risk of interference and that the prosecution had a strong case that was based on direct evidence, documentary evidence and confessional evidence.

Tavatuilagi has sought Legal Aid assistance and has been further remanded in custody.

The case has been adjourned to February 6 for mention.
