The Telecom Fijiana team thrashed France 31-12 in the fifth place playoff at the Allianz Stadium, Sydney yesterday.

This is the first time the Iliesa Tanivula-coached team finished fifth for two tournaments in a row.

Tanivula was proud of the achievement.

“Finishing fifth in back-to-back series is something we had not achieved but we need to be consistent,” Tanivula said.

“I think consistency is very important. If we can be consistent and take another step up, we will be closer to our first series win.

“It’s a matter of taking it a step at a time. We have Las Vegas in a month’s time and have a lot to think about. But for now I’m happy with the players and the way they played.

“We had a slow start but credit to the girls for being mentally strong.

“It was disappointing losing to Australia in the Cup quarterfinal but I’m proud of the girls and the way they performed. Finishing fifth is something we got to be proud of and we just need to keep moving on from here.”

Meanwhile, Canada won the Women Sevens Series beating USA 21-17 in the Cup final.

New Zealand lead the standing with 36 points, closely behind is Australia with 32 followed by Canada 30 and Fiji on 24.

Results: Cup quarterfinals: New Zealand 24-5 France, Ireland 5-17 USA, Australia 17-5 Fiji, Russia 5-26 Canada

Cup semi-finals: New Zealand 12-19 USA, Australia 7-12 Canada.
