7 Incidents Of Serious Crimes Filed In Court Last Month

There were 12 people charged with a total of seven separate serious crime incidents in January.

The incidents were murder (one), attempted murder (one) aggravated robbery (two), abuse of office (one), act with intent to cause grievous harm (one) and criminal intimidation (one).

There were seven victims of these separate offences.

A retrial was ordered by the Court of Appeal in the 2010 murder case. In the attempted murder case, the accused and the victim were defacto partners.

In the aggravated robbery, two people were allegedly robbed of $133,000 and $1380 respectively during a carjacking incident in Lau­toka.

A 60-year-old was charged with abuse of office whilst employed by the Ministry of Provincial Department and allegedly received pay­ments amounting to $184,000.

In another carjacking case in Suva where a cane knife was used, a 27-year-old has been charged with one count of act with intent to cause grievous harm and one count of criminal intimidation.

The following data is authorised for release by the Office of the Di­rector of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) and relates to the number of formal indictments (information) filed in the High Courts of Fiji by the Director of Public Prosecutions throughout the month.

This data is confined to incidents of serious crimes other than sex­ual violence offences which are recorded and published separately.
