The Government will continue to tackle problems faced by Fijians while Opposition play politics, says Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama.

The Prime Minister made this statement in Parliament yesterday when responding to criticism by Opposition MP, Biman Prasad on his fight against climate change.

Mr Bainimarama will preside over the COP23 meeting in Bonn, Germany, later this year.

He said the world was looking to Fiji to maintain the momentum that was set by the Paris Agreement at the end of 2015 for substantial cuts in the carbon emissions that were causing global warming.

Mr Bainimarama said the impact of climate change was getting worse.

He said it was not false alarm and it was something that would happen down the track.

Mr Bainimarama said as the Prime Minister it was his responsibility to confront the dangers of climate change.

He said that it was disappointing to see criticisms from Opposition MP Mr Prasad on his fight against climate change.

Mr Bainimarama said a statement from the National Federation Party questioned the priority given to COP23.

“In his strange view of the world, I am spending my time on something he doesn’t think is important,” Mr Bainimarama said.

“Well, the leaders of almost 200 countries aren’t questioning it.

“They think it deserves the highest priority. But, of course, what would they know?”

Mr Bainimarama said anyone who knew about international diplomacy would also know that it was conducted leader to leader.

“The statements by the honourable Prasad and other opposition figures demonstrate their lack of knowledge and lack of understanding of the immense challenge before us.

“This is an extremely serious matter – a life or death struggle to protect our environment and our way of life.

“Yet the opposition quibbles about me doing what every other Fijian knows needs to be done, not only for ourselves but every vulnerable person on the planet. “Flippancy and ignorance in the face of the greatest challenge the world has ever faced.

“Madam Speaker, no vision for Fiji. No idea how the world works. No alternative plan to future proof ourselves, our children and future generations of Fijians.

“Petty, small minded and irrelevant. [hat’s the honourable Biman Prasad and his once great party, that is now reduced to a shell.” he said.

SODELPA MP Viliame Gavoka said the Prime Minister should spend more time with the issues here in Fiji rather than focusing on climate change at the international level.
