Vodafone Fijian 7s coach Gareth Baber has asked fans to be patient with the team after they finished fifth in Sydney.

The result has seen the Vodafone Fijians dropped to the third spot of the 2016/17 World Sevens Series.

“We have a superb following back home and also here in Sydney as you could see Fijians were everywhere which was incredible,” Baber told SUNsports.

“I ask the fans to be patient with the boys as we have some young ones in there and some boys who have won Olympic gold and who are probably not at their peak forms as well, but they are all trying to work to get to where the team needs to be.

“I know how much rugby means to the people of Fiji but we cannot win everything and we still have a few legs to go in the series, so we will see what happens there.”

The Vodafone Fijians are in a tough pool of the USA 7s which is from March 3-5. They face neighbours, Australia who are the top seed, Japan and Scotland in Pool D.

Baber said there are a few areas they need to work on.

“We will obviously work on all areas of our game but I mean we scored a number of tries and also we prevented a number of tries as well.

“Everyone sees Fijian rugby as a very attacking base rugby, which is our point of difference as a team. We want to make sure that we prevent teams from scoring more tries.

“Of course discipline will be an area we will need to work on as well. We need to keep our head in the game and try not to do anything that will cost us a game.

“So far I’m pleased with the efforts the boys have put in and I hope we can go further than that,” he added.
