For the first time there will be women’s rugby at the much-awaited 4th Martintar 7s tournament, which is set for April 28-29.

Tournament co-ordinator Biu Waqaniburotu said the shift in the tournament dates was due to the closure of Prince Charles Park as it undergoes upgrading works.

“The tournament organiser, Cawa Methodist Church, is optimistic that the new dates will not dampen the great spirits of the Martintar 7s tournament, which has been going on for the last three years,” he said. Waqaniburotu said the organisers hope to encourage and support women in their development.

“We are not only organising a rugby sevens tournament to fundraise but are also assisting government, vanua, churches and non-governmental agencies in the fight to stop rape and violence in our societies.

“With the Fiji Women’s Crisis Centre as sponsors the inclusion of the women’s team will support the tournament theme of “Stop Violence Respect Women and Children,” he said.

The tournament sees a total of $13, 000 prize money at stake.

He said a total of 40 men’s team and 8 women’s team will be participating in this year’s tournament. Last year’s winner Wardens Gold won $5000 and will get free entry to this year’s tournament and is also the first team to be registered to defend their title.

“With the dates confirmed the tournament organisers are now stepping up their preparation.”

Waqaniburotu said the registration of teams close on March 31. The registration fee for the men’s team is $400 per team while it is $250 per women’s team.

“Teams can deposit their registration fee at our Bank of South Pacific (BSP) account. The account name is Cawa Chapel and account number is 4237651.

“Officials are also advised to write the name of their team on the narration column of the BSP deposit slip.”

Waqaniburotu said he can be contacted on 9059530 if team officials need any other clarification.
