Around 40 locums have joined the programme, the minister adds.

Locums have improved the quality of health services around the country, say Rosy Akbar.

The Minister for Health and Medical Services said yesterday in Parliament that locums were typically those doctors who worked in private practice or recently retired from Government services.

She said they mainly included general practitioners who provided support in areas like accident emergency or specialists who worked in hospitals in the out and in-patient department.

Ms Akbar said they could also provide good mentoring for the younger colleagues. She said the initiative to get in locums worked well for the ministry and patients.

“Our locums are helping the ministry to deliver on its promise for access to quality health care for Fijians,” Ms Akbar said.

She said the engagement of locums came about after there was a need for people to work during peak hours in medical centres around the country.

Ms Akbar said around 40 locum doctors had joined the programme – 30 were general practitioners and 10 specialists.

She said the general practitioners were paid a rate of $50 an hour while specialists were paid $80 an hour.

Ms Akbar said the rates had proved that Government was committed to provide for general practitioners and specialists who were ready to provide their assistance.

“They work during peak hours which are normally from 6am to 10.30am and in the evenings from 5pm to 9pm,” she said.

Ms Akbar said the introduction of locums had improved health service delivery.
