Suva Grammar School’s new headgirl’s credits her parents for constantly emphasising the importance of education especially during tough times.

Mere Nuku was badged as headgirl yesterday during the school’s prefects’ induction ceremony.

“Both of my parents had always wanted me to be the headgirl. So to be able to reach their expectations, I am so happy about that, but I know that even if I received another badge they would have still be proud of me,” said the 18-year-old.

Mere’s mother and aunt who were present yesterday played a part in the ceremony. Her aunt badged her while her mother badged her sister as a prefect for Grammar’s Blue House.

Her father was unable to attend the ceremony. However, Mere said before coming to school, her father kissed her cheek and said: “Lewa, good luck and all the best.”

The newly inducted headgirl said: “We have gone through rough moments sometimes at home, but my parents would push me to work hard in school and to take part in sports.

“They always made sure that we go to school every day,” she said.

Mere said had never missed a day of school except for last year when she had a sports injury.

“I feel honoured and challenged at the same time, because it is a really big school that I will be leading. There are an enormous amount of students of 1255 to deal with.”

The Namalata native from Kadavu also said she had never expected to be chosen to be the school’s headgirl.

She recalled her friends joking about her being the headgirl a few days before the official announcement was made.

“I was sort of shocked because I thought it was going to be one of my other friends,” she said.

Three deputy headgirls have been selected to assist her in her duties.
