The Fiji Commerce Commission (FCC) will be having a consultations on the draft ‘Landlord and Tenant Act’ in Savusavu today. This is the last of the first round of consultations.

Chief executive officer, Joel Abraham and his technical working group presented the draft during a consultation in Nabouwalu and Labasa this week.

Mr Abraham said everyone was invited including those who were neither tenants nor landlords.

Some of the common issues raised in the northern division were, the non-issuance of receipts by landlords, non-issuance of agreements by landlords, damaging of property by tenants and landlords inability to increase the rent to cover the cost of damages.

“We have completed our first round of consultations in the Central and Western divisions and what has been consistent so far is that landlords are saying that they have a right, while some tenants are grieved because they don’t have access to bills or agreement.

“What we have advised them is that there are solutions available under the Small Claims Tribunal.

“However, the landlords said this would take up time and suggested if there could be a law to deal with all issues.”

Mr Abraham said those who could not attend the consultations were advised to write to them or give them a call.

Altogether, there are three rounds of consultations this year.
