Young Ra lawyer recalls hardship during study period.

Jeremaia Kakaivalu Mudunaivalu stands proud that his retired father witnessed his admission to the bar on Friday.

“When I graduated with my Degree in Law and Politics, my dad was serving in Lebanon as a soldier. I am so happy he is here with all of my family members to witness this special moment,” said the 26-year-old man from Burelevu, Saivou, in Ra.

His father would earn $100 a week where $40 was given to him and his sister and the $20 was spent at home.

“It was a struggle and I thank the Government for formulating the Tertiary Loans Scheme, which has helped me pay for my fees,” he said.

“When my sister and I were small, my parents asked us what we wanted to become. I wanted to become a doctor but my younger sister opted to become a lawyer.

“So I was thinking of other professions I can do and I thought of becoming a lawyer.”

Going through law school for five years was tough for him but it taught him many lessons that books cannot teach.

He is the first in his family to be a lawyer.

“I found it difficult at first as I had to struggle on my own especially with the long nights of studying,” he said.

He started his degree in law and politics at the University of the South Pacific in 2010 and completed it in 2015.

“It was like all those burdens from the years of struggling has finally paid off. It is a blessing and honour that I have finally reached this pillar of my academic achievement,” he said.
