I wish my father was here to see me be the person I am today said newly-inducted Nagigi Primary School headgirl Nishal Chand.

The 13-year-old of Ranibulu, outside Labasa Town was moved to tears as she said this.

“I was nine-years-old when my father died from a heart attack,” Nishal said.

“Since then my mother has been struggling working as a saleswoman in one of the shops in town to help me and my three siblings.

“I was surprised when the teachers elected me to be the headgirl.”

“When I told my mother, Neelam Devi, she was so happy and said this was father’s blessing from above.

“People say loved ones never die in spirit,” the youngest of four siblings said.

“I always look at the stars in the night, talking to my father about my day.”

The aspiring mathematics lecturer promised she would perform her role as expected through her parents’ blessings.

Meanwhile, Sonal Chand of Korovatu, Labasa, said he was surprised to be elected as the headboy of the school.

“Being the son of a fisherman with no brawny background made me wonder as to how I was chosen among the many fortunate students,” the 13-year-old aspiring to be an engineer said.

“I am very thankful to the teachers for noticing my ability to lead.” Edited by Ranoba Baoa
