Talica Salalevu and villagers of Korotogo, Baravi, in Nadroga were enjoying a normal Sunday evening when they saw water flood their village.

Within 30 minutes the village was flooded with sea water, families were forced to flee as water entered their homes.

The flood was caused by the high tide and heavy rain, one villager said.

Ms Salalevu, the mother of Vodafone Fijian 7s rep Jasa Veremalua, said some of their homes were not spared by the gushing waters, which happened around 7pm.

“We were caught by surprise. We had similar floods a few years back,” she said while pointing to the mark left on the wall of her home.

“Only some homes near the highway were spared, the rest on this side were all underwater. It was because of the high tide and continuous non-stop rain that lasted for about two hours.”

She said it was lucky that it took place early in the evening.

“You should have been here to see at that time. We had boats cruising around here.”

When the Fiji Sun visited the village yesterday home owners were drying off their household items like mats, carpets, furniture out in the sun.

Village headman Apimeleki Kunavula said majority of the homes were affected. He confirmed no one suffered any injury.

Other areas in Korotogo including water ways adjacent to the Outrigger Fiji Beach Resort quarters and Kula Eco Wild Adventure Park were affected too. Villages along the Coral Coast like Malevu recorded flash flooding as well.
