Promising Vio Panthers fullback Maikeli Rokodinono flew out of the country yesterday to attend the Penrith Panthers Under-20 trials in Sydney, Australia on Saturday.

Fiji National Rugby League (FNRL) development officer, Lagilagi Golea, told SUNsports that this is a big breakthrough for the Lomanikoro youngster from Bua.

“Maikeli played for Natabua High School in the Deans Trophy’s under-17 final against QVS in 2015 where he was given the best player award,” he said.

“The DVD copy of that final somehow got to the Panthers coaching staff and they immediately wanted Maikeli to come over for the trials.”

Golea said, Rokodinono is a talented player and should easily make the Panthers U20 side for this year’s NRL Holden Cup U20s competition.

“I rate him as the next Suliasi Vunivalu. Even the Saint Mary’s rugby league club in Sydney are also ready to take him in.”

Golea said they are grateful to Australian businessman Greg Brown, Warren Smith of the St Mary’s Rugby League, FNRL,  Jayjay and Aralai of England who are the sponsors of the Vio Panthers side.
