Sigatoka Man In Fear Of Landslide

Businessman’s wife saw part of the land give way during heavy rain.
A retired businessman from Sigatoka is living in fear after a block of land near his home gave way to a landslide on Sunday after heavy rain.
Krish Varma, 50, who has been living on the property since 1992, said his wife saw part of the land slide onto the road.
“It was around 9pm and my wife saw everything from our balcony,” he said.
“It sounds scary for me because I live here. The landslide was caused by the continuous rain.”
He said a few years back during a flood the other side of the hill also gave way. The landslide had and covered the entire road and it took days to clear it away.
Sigatoka Town Council chief executive officer Tulsi Ram said the landslide forced motorists to a single lane.
“There were no serious damage and contractors and council staff members cleared the debris, and traffic flow is now normal again,” said Mr Ram.
Nadroga Provincial Administrator Peni Koro confirmed that there were reports of flash flooding disrupting road access at various Irish crossings.
“Water level has receded at various crossings during the day and normalcy has been restored in those affected areas,” Mr Koro said.
