The Nadi Aviators rugby league side suffered a major blow days before their clash against Papua New Guinea’s champions Lae Snax Tigers in the Champion v Champion clash at Lawaqa Park, Sigatoka on Saturday.

This was because three players secured overseas contracts and are in doubt for the clash.

They are Rusiate Saukuru who has joined Tasman RC for the ITM Cup competition while Kavekini Varo and Jonetani Matewai are awaiting the outcome of their visa application to join Northland RC in New Zealand.

To strengthen the side, three Vodafone Fiji Resident players of Joasa Drodrolagi (Nabua Broncos), Anisito Komai (Kinoya Sea Eagles) and winger Simon Wise (Coastline Roos) have been drafted into the side.

Aviators head coach Vela Tawake said yesterday it was a setback but they have to build a stronger outfit.

“We are optimistic of a positive outcome,” he said.

“Varo and Mateiwai are in doubt. We hope they can play but we have brought in players to bolster the side.

“We have also marched into camp this week to set the combinations right. This is the best we can do.”

Tawake added that they have been training twice a day and know that it would be a good test.

He said the adverse weather condition in Nadi last week has not marred their preparation.

The team are also boosted with the inclusion of Under-18 Best Player Samuela Daveta  from Nadi Eels and former Jack’s Nadi centre Sunia Vosikata.

Vela said he is working around the clock before naming the final squad on Thursday. The clash kicks-off at 5pm.
