Film Fiji hosted 57 productions last year which generated around $120.4 million into the country.

This was revealed by the chief executive officer Dallas Foon while making submissions before the Public Accounts Committee in Parliament yesterday.

Opposition Member of Parliament Aseri Radrodro had raised the issue when he questioned how the entity had benefitted Fiji’s economy.

Mr Foon responded they had the highest density of Bollywood movies in Fiji in 2012.

“In 2014 Fiji hosted 52 productions in Fiji, which is the largest at that point in time,” he said.

He said there was low production in 2015 because of political issues and natural disasters.

Mr Foon said the film industry was growing steadily which contributed to Fiji’s foreign exchange and employment.

He said around 2012 they decided to rebrand Fiji Audio Visual Commission to Film Fiji.

Mr Foon said the decision to rebrand the commission was to modernise it to international standards and align it with other film commissions around the world.

“It also provided more assimilation with film makers around the world to also understand that Film Fiji is a film commission for the country like other states around the world,” he said.

Mr Foon said their main role was to develop and grow the audio visual industry in Fiji.

He said a lot of people misinterpreted their role thinking that it was to go out and promote Fiji for filming.

“As they come to Fiji we try to attach more locals to the production because the film industry is very much hands on. There are not very many people in the film industry that are qualified from university, a lot of them have come from the ground up,” he said.
