Financial Records Disappeared From Files: Commissioner

Financial records disappeared from the files of the Independent Legal Services Commission in 2014, it was disclosed yesterday.
But the Commissioner, Thomas Hickie, who made the disclosure, said he didn’t elaborate further on the matter because it was subject to criminal procedures.
Mr Hickie made the remarks in his submission before the Public Accounts Committee in Parliament.
Mr Hickie said there were pending proceedings and there were also suspicious files within the commission. He said most of the matters they dealt with were sensitive.
Mr Hickie said the Government of the day was responsible for setting up the policies.
He added that it was also responsible for implementing those policies at the end of the day.
SODELPA Opposition MP Ratu Sela Nanovo had expressed his concern about ministerial involvement.
Government MP, Mohammed Dean, said it was Ratu Sela’s own personal opinion.
Officials from the Auditor-General’s office said when questioned, they didn’t have any say.
However, the officials further said that involvement of the line minister was in the legislation.
“The Auditor-General just comes in and sees that the procedures are complied. The Auditor-General cannot comment on that,” the officials said.
