To access quality essential medicines, it is vital to have an effective procurement process with a good understanding of the Intellectual Property Rights, said Minister of Health and Medical Services Rosy Akbar.

“When it comes to quality, the system must ensure that the medicines reaching the patient are of good quality, safe and are effective,” Ms Akbar said.

Ms Akbar was speaking to about 40 participants at the regional meeting on Quality Assurance and Rational Use of Essential Medicines in the Pacific Island Countries at Tanoa International Hotel in Nadi yesterday.

“Through this there needs to be an appropriate quality assurance system in place which includes managerial, technical and legal aspects,” she said.

She stressed that policies must be put in place to ensure access quality and safety of essential medicines with affordable costs.

These are issues for National Medicines Committees for Pacific Island Counties to consider seriously, she said.

The nomination of chair and co-chair of WHO Uhjin Kim said with the constrained human and financial resources, countries were struggling to ensure quality of imported medicines.

“Access to safe, effective and quality assured essential medicines and their rational use is underpinned by sustainable and effective pharmaceutical systems,” Ms Uhjin said.
