Being appointed as the headgirl came as a surprise even though it has always been Ashrita Chand’s dream since she started school.

The Year 8 student of Wainikoro Public School in Macuata said it was a humbling moment for her and her family.

“I am very happy that I have been given this role and I will carry out my work to the best of my abilities,” Ashrita said.

“This means a lot having my teachers believe in me, trusting that I could lead my fellow students and I will not fail them.”

The eldest in a family of six said leadership was not a new territory for her because she also looks after he siblings in the absence of her parents and had to always lead by example.

“The job of being a leader is not an easy one. We have to have the qualities of a leader, being disciplined, responsible, never late and so on, so that we are leading by example,” the 12-year-old said.

Headboy Kartik Chand shared similar sentiments saying that he looked forward to the mammoth task set  ahead of them.

“I am happy, I will do my best in ensuring that I carry out this role to the expectations of the ones who have appointed me – my teachers,” Mr Chand said.

The duo are both from Taganikula and are from a cane-farming back-ground.

While Ashrita wants to be a doctor, Kartik wishes to be a lawyer in the future.

The school induction was held at the school on Monday.
