Leadership is about making others better as a result of our presence and making sure that impact lasts in your absence.

Vunimono High School principal, Anil Prasad, made these remarks during the school’s prefect induction ceremony at the Vunimono Sanatan Hall in Nausori yesterday.

He told the newly inducted 166 prefects to seek advice so that they could make the right decision at school.

“One of the important keys of being a great leader is to properly manage your time and plan as it will not allow these responsibilities to affect your academic performance,” he said.

“You have the power to strengthen others however the power is not control.

“Power is strength and giving that strength to others is what makes you a great leader.

“Remember that you are not born as leaders. We are making you leaders.

“Leaders of the year go where there is no path and leave a trail,” Mr Prasad said.

School’s headboy, Priyesh Bhatia, 17, of Nausori Town, said the important key he would focus on was communication.

“Good communication skills are the key to be approachable whether it is to students, parents or teachers.

“The leader should be clear and confident of his/her role and decision,” Priyesh said.

Headgirl, Emi Martin, 17, of Koronatoga in Cakaudrove, Vanua Levu, said she believed in being involved and support juniors.

“As prefects and heads of the school, we are given a lot of responsibility in the form of maintaining the school status and discipline,” Emi said.

“Being involved in the events held at school with parents, teachers, management and community members, gives us an open platform to put ourselves out there.

“It also puts us in good stead for the future.”
