A father of nine was sentenced to 26 months imprisonment yesterday after he was convicted for theft.

He appeared at the Suva Magistrates Court before Magistrate Shageeth Somaratne.

Imanueli Tuniwas convicted of one count of theft.

The court heard that on August 4 last year in Suva, Tuni and two others stole a woman’s handbag containing $15,000 cash.

The court heard the complainant went to do some banking in the BankSouth Pacific.

Police prosecutor Corporal Joshua Shaw said the complainant had $15,000 cash in her possession.

While trying to park her car behind MHCC, Tuni and his accomplice started talking to her.

Knowing that she was distracted, Tuni and the others grabbed the woman’s bag containing the money and ran away.

Despite the matter being reported to the Police, the money was not recovered.

In passing sentence, Magistrate Somaratne said 10 years is the maximum penalty for theft.
