Since the first day I attended Naikelikoso Primary School, I set my goals on becoming the school’s headboy one day, says Avish Chand.

After the prefects’ induction at school, located 50 kilometres from Labasa Town, the 13-year-old said he was happy that his dream came true.

“In the first day of school, my mother introduced me to the headboy of that year,” Avish said.

“He inspired me mainly by the way he greeted me.”

“The other reason why I was inspired is that I have always wanted to serve the school as it has given me a lot. I thought to myself the only way I can accomplish this and give something back is by becoming headboy, so that was my main inspiration,” he said.

As the second eldest of three siblings from Kelikoso in Macuata province, Avish said: “Now that I’m the headboy of 108 students, I have been given many responsibilities which I expected and will enjoy very much.

“These responsibilities make me feel happy and proud as this gives me the feeling that I am a true part of this school.

“Of course none of this would be possible if I didn’t have the support of my parents.”

The aspiring Police officer said his parents are sugarcane workers and they are the reason for his happiness.

Meanwhile, Vasiti Saiso, the newly-inducted headgirl said she was surprised to be given this role.

“My aim is to become a primary school teacher and for that I need to build up some leadership skills,” the 13-year-old of Nukunuku settlement in Macuata said.

“I would like to thank the teachers for giving me the opportunity to work together with 30 prefects to take care of the school.”
