For Ukraine representative Svitlana Yanova meeting two Fijian Presidents and taking a picture with them was a humbling experience.

Ms Yanova is part of the 29th Ship for the World Youth leader’s programmes port of call in Suva this weekend.

She was taken by surprise and humbled to know that she had not only met the former President, Ratu Epeli Nailatikau, but the current President Major-General (Ret’d) Jioji Konrote, and the Minister for Youth and Sports, Laisenia Tuitubou, onboard the ship.

“I was very lucky to converse with the President. Such open-minded people and so kind and always smiling like all Fijians here,” said Ms Yanova.

She had no idea who she was talking to until she was told later.

Speaking at the function, chief guest President Konrote welcomed more than 200 youth delegates from 11 countries around the world.

“I hope you enjoy your stay here in Fiji and that you learn as much as you can on the trip,” he said.

Diplomatic representatives, former alumni members, and families were part of the function last night.

Fijian delegate Akuila Tako, said it still feels like a dream and was emotional when asked about the journey so far.

“I still can’t believe this is happening even after arriving in Japan, until now it still feels like a dream,” he said.

Earlier in the day, the delegates were part of a traditional welcoming ceremony held at the Civic Centre in Suva.

The youths will have activities planned out today and will depart tomorrow. Edited by Naisa Koroi
