Villagers Miss ‘Humble Man’ Seru

Close family members and relatives of Filipe Seru, 61, still talk about his sudden death when Tropical Cyclone Winston ravaged parts of Fiji on February 20, last year.
A villager, who wished to remain anonymous, said: “Nearly every day we will hear people here talking about the sad death of Filipe.
“He was a very humble and caring man and he socialised with everybody. He is also known from other villages because of his good personality.”
When a Fiji Sun team arrived at his home last week, the family was not home. The villager said they were probably at their farm.
According to the villager, the late Mr Seru was inside his home when the killer storm blew away their house and landed in a deep valley metres away. Their house was on a hill.
“He was seriously injured which led to his death. It was sad,” he said.
“What we miss about him is his presence and contribution to all the traditional protocols and ceremonies in the village.”
Mr Seru was buried the following day.
“We will always remember him,” said the villager.
Families of late Mr Seru are still mourning the death of their father, grandfather and brother, he said.
