The Multi-Faith National Service of Remembrance and Thanksgiving was not only an event to commemorate the death and destruction brought about Tropical Cyclone Winston but to celebrate the resilience of Fijian people.

Australian Minister for International Development and the Pacific, Senator Concetta Fierravanti-Wells, made the remarks yesterday.

She was among diplomats, Government ministers, victims of Tropical Cyclone Winston, relatives of those killed and others present at the event at Albert Park.

Opposition party leaders failed to attend the event.

SODELPA leader Sitiveni Rabuka claimed the event was inappropriate because people were still living in tents.

National Federation Party leader Biman Prasad was understood to be attending a funeral.

Senator Fierravanti-Wells said she was honoured to be part of the auspicious occasion.

“Australia stands ready and stood ready to assist Fiji in its time of need, as neighbours it’s important to assist in good times and in bad,” she said.

Senator Fierravanti –Wells said the Australian Government was working towards building better schools destroyed by TC Winston and strengthening the agriculture sector.

She said they were also committed in building a better health system after the destruction.

“We will off course receive other requests for assistance, technical advice and assistance, preparedness and whole range of different areas.

“We will consider those requests when they are made by the Fijian Government,” Senator Fierravanti –Wells said.
