Rajendra Kumar watched helplessly as the love of his life, Mohini Lata, 48, was swept away by strong currents in a creek.

The creek connects to the river near Waiyavi in Lautoka.

On Sunday, Ms Lata had accompanied Mr Kumar to the creek where he would need to cross a bridge to go to work after a Sunday lunch.

“I was returning to my work place and I had already crossed the bridge when I heard her calling me. I looked back and saw her; she was already in the water,” Mr Kumar said.

“I tried moving fast to where she was calling from because my foot was injured, but by the time I got there she had already drifted down to the river.”

Mr Kumar’s wife was a salesgirl for Joys Gift. They have three children.

“I think she was trying to wash her feet near the creek because the bridge is there to cross but she was under the bridge when she was calling my name,” he said.

With no one around to help him, Mr Kumar said he went he returned to his home in Field 4, Lautoka. There, one of Mr Kumar’s sons, Kunal Raj, returned with him to the creek, dived in and dragged the mother’s body out of the water.

Daughter Poonam Raj said she had lost her best friend.

“My mother was a kind woman. People in the community know her very well because she was a kind-hearted woman,” a pregnant Ms Raj said. She is expected to give birth to a child next month.

Police spokesperson Ana Naisoro confirmed the incident. She said a post mortem examination will be conducted today.

She said: “A 48-year-old woman of Field 4, Lautoka slipped into the river and washed away by the strong currents. Her body was discovered and conveyed to the Lautoka Hospital, but was pronounced dead on arrival. This happened on Sunday at 4pm, Stage 5, Waiyavi, in Lautoka.
