As the nation marked the anniversary of Tropical Cyclone Winston hitting our shores yesterday, one woman recalled how her husband saved her life on that stormy day one year ago.

Esava Kobiti, 74 and his wife, Maca Kobiti, 64,  from Nacamaki Village on Koro Island shared their story with the Fiji Sun yesterday.

They said they were inside their house when the violent winds struck.

“The wind was extremely strong that day. I closed all our doors and windows, and listened to the horrific sounds outside,” said Mr Kobiti.

He was inside his house with his wife and two grandchildren. Their house was located near the shorelines of their village.

He said that he could hear the waves breaking at the shore and the sound was moving towards their house.

“After about an hour, a huge tidal wave crashed onto the village which broke into our house. The strong current moved us inside the house. We were scared,” he said.

Mr Kobiti said that he was worried for his grandchildren so he carried one and asked his wife to carry the other.

“The very next thing we did was try to get out of our house before it collapsed. At that point in time, my wife was seriously injured and she was very weak,” he said.

Her right leg was sliced open by a piece of glass.

“She lost a lot of blood so I held onto her, along with my grandchildren and I tried to take them to the hall where everyone else was,” he said.

Mrs Kobiti said, she was thankful to her husband for being strong and having high hopes of surviving that night.

“We thanked the Lord for his love and mercy, that has kept us alive till today. We will never forget that day,” they said.

The couple were also part of the national service of remembrance and thanksgiving to commemorate the anniversary of Tropical Cyclone Winston at Albert Park in Suva yesterday.
