From its humble beginning way back in 1976, the Fiji Bitter sponsored- Marist 7s tournaments have become the breeding ground of many of our top rugby players.

Over the years, many of these talented players were first identified through the Marist tournaments. Most of them have gone on to don the national jumper while some have secured Super Rugby contracts or have moved on to play in Europe.

Let’s take a look at three players who got their biggest break while playing in the Fiji Bitter Marist 7s tournament.

WILLIAM RYDER

This Bua native first made his mark during the 2005 Fiji Bitter Marist 7s tournament while playing for PWD Bure. Ryder’s lightening side-steps and speed not only thrilled the sell-out crowd in Suva but convinced the national selectors to include him into the national sevens team to the 2005 Sevens Rugby World Cup in Hong Kong. They won the Melrose Cup for the second time while Ryder moved on to international stardom.

PIO TUWAI

Dubbed the King of Offloads, this lanky Votua man from Ba first appeared at the 2009 Fiji Bitter Marist 7s tournament playing for Wardens Gold.

What captivated the big crowd at the then National Stadium was his ability to win the kickoffs with ease coupled with his elusiveness to slip past tackles.

He was quickly drafted into the national rugby 7s team that was coached by Iliesa Tanivula and made his debut in South Africa during the World Sevens Series.

KALIONE NASOKO

The rise of Kalione Nasoko came during last year’s Fiji Bitter Marist 7s tournament at the ANZ Stadium, Suva.

He played at rover for an unknown NewNet Yasawa Stingers that caused the biggest surprise when they reached the Cup final only to go down 24-12 to Tabadamu.

Nasoko has now established his place in the Vodafone Fijian 7s team playing in Dubai, Cape Town, Wellington, Sydney tournaments of the 2016/17 World Sevens Series.
