Vodafone Fijian 7s head coach Garreth Baber has urged senior players to step-up since experienced forward Jasa Veremalua won’t be available for the Las Vegas and Vancouver tournaments.

Baber said Veremalua has contributed a lot for the past two years and played a crucial role in the team in terms of leadership.

“I’ve looked at what Jasa has done for the past years and most notably the Olympics,” he told SUNsports yesterday.

“Jasa also played in the first four tournaments this year and was someone who we counted on.”

Baber said the return of forwards Apisai Domolailai and Masivesi Dakuwaqa has been timely.

“At least we’ve got back some sort of strong leadership in the team.

Their presence will put pressure on the other players to work hard and perform.”

Baber said Domolailai and Dakuwaqa are serious of retaining their spot in the side and this is evident of how they’ve worked on their fitness.

“They both have undergone rehab on their injuries and have done well. We’ve got to be smarter on how to use them if they are selected into the final squad.”

Baber said he was pleased at how new players like Mesulame Kunavula and Kalione Nasoko have been doing during training.

“Both have bright futures as I’ve said it’s a matter of pushing them on and getting them to pressurise the likes of Sevuloni Moceinacagi and Setareki Bituniyata.”

As the squad march into camp today, Baber says, he is going to work on their attack, defence and continuity in order to move the opposition around.

“To get the opposition in a stress position and when that happens they move numbers of body in one space and that is where we exploit them. From the last tournaments we did well in that area and we scored more tries however, the way we play is a huge risk which I am completely aware of.”
