She says she had given up hope too and wanted to die with him, Laite Voreqe of Vanuakula settlement in Ba stayed with her dead husband all night as the winds howled over them.

Earlier her husband, Taniela Voreqe, was trying to stop the door being blown over.

Instead, he was crushed to death by the door ripped by Tropical Cyclone Winston.

Debris from the roof began falling on her but she didn’t care anymore.

“I had given up with life and just wanted to go with him,” Ms Voreqe said.

It was the sound of her children’s cries that brought her back to reality knowing that there was still a reason to live.

“The electricity was out and the sound of my children crying in the dark was too much for me to bear,” she said.

She started groping around with her arms outstretched in the dark and started calling her eldest son who then took the rest of her siblings next door to their neighbour.

She remained by her husband’s side until the morning.

His body stayed at their home for the next 24 hours as movement was still restricted by blocked roads that were also flooded in certain areas.

They were able to move him to Lautoka Hospital, the next day.

According to her, Mr Voreqe had wedged his body against the door of their home, just when the force of the wind tore the door open from its hinges and slammed it against his back.

“He pitched forward and slammed his body on the floor,” she said.

His dying words were “please, take care of the children” before closing his eyes.

“I shook him a couple of times but he was gone.”

For the next 12 months, she lived through her faith being an active member of the Assemblies of God Church.
