The Central Amateur Boxing Association (CABA) is on a mission to revive the sport in the Central Division. Association president Pio Rova told SUNsports that they are looking to recruit and train amateur boxers from all over the country.

“The Central Amateur Boxing Association is a recognised body that deals with local amateur boxing in the division which covers the Suva area, Ra, Namosi, Nausori, Wainibuka, Lomaiviti and Levuka.

“We have had three tournaments last year and are now holding our programme every fortnight. Our aim is to bring boxing back to the level it was once before. Fiji was well known for boxing before sevens rugby and after Sakaraia Ve’s time boxing went into the doldrums. Now we have some promising boxers and we are talking with the business community on the possibility of sponsoring our programmes.

“We want to help the local clubs because some of them don’t have proper equipments. We started off by paying their fares and providing their accommodation. Now we want to have a boxing house under FABA (Fiji Amateur Boxing Association) where they have the facilities to train and be looked after.”

The division has been renowned for producing top amateur boxers in the past like Joe Tukuna, Sunia Cama, Alipate Korovou, Sakaraia Ve, Wili Tarika, Joe Nitiva, Kamisese Vaubula, Sani Fine, Anthony Naidu, Livai Vakaloloma, Setoki Mafi, Josefa Ravudi, Pauliasi Ratu, Koroi Vodo, Vereniki Raiwalui, Apete Raiwalui, Isimeli Lesi, Marika Binatagi, Mohammed Arif, Gyan Kumar, Peni Qarau, Trevor Raiwalui, Sikeli Gavidi, Osea Nakanacagi, Inia Vuli, Opeti Tagi, Vitori Natwake and list goes on.

The Fiji Amateur Boxing Association along with CABA will be hosting an international tournament on March 25.

“We have a boxing tournament next month where a team from Queensland is coming over for an international match in six weight categories so we are co-partners with FABA.

“But before that we will have our competition on Saturday at the Marist Brothers High School’s Lambert Hall in the afternoon. We will see all clubs under our association come face to face.” he said.

Now under the International Boxing Association regulation they will be hosting professional bouts in their amateur programme as it will come under their amateur regulations.

“What we like to do we’ll leave it open for professional clubs to contact us if they want to be part of this international tournament next month.”
