Swami Vivekananda College prepared items to promote the conservation and protection of mother tongues in Fiji to celebrate International Mother Tongue Day yesterday.

With this year’s theme titled ‘Towards Sustainable Futures through Multilingual Education’ the school celebrated with traditional dances, oratory and songs to mark the worldwide event in promoting awareness of cultural diversity at the school.

Head of Department Languages Margaret Naicker thanked the Ministry of Education for allowing schools to observe and celebrate such an important event.

“Languages are the most powerful instruments of preserving and developing our tangible heritage,” Ms Naicker.

“Hence to promote the dissemination of mother tongues and to commemorate this occasion, the students of Swami Vivekananda College prepared items such as traditional dances, oratory and songs to promote the conservation and protection of mother tongues in Fiji.”

She said some activities which were put up during the celebrations were meke (iTaukei traditional dance), Hindi classical dance, Chinese, Sri Lankan, Korean and Rotuman items.
