Wins by Fiji and Vanuatu at the 2017 ICC World Cricket League qualifier– East Asia-Pacific see them share the top of the table, while Indonesia recorded their first win.

In the all-Pacific showdown at Dower Park, Samoa chose to bat first and got off to a great start with an 85-run partnership for the first wicket. However a batting collapse saw them lose four wickets for just one run as Riyahd Khan took three wickets in one over on his way to figures of 4-36.

When Daniel Burgess departed for just five, Samoa were in deep trouble at 6 for 130.

But some big hitting from youngsters Maletino Maiava (37) and Tiafala Alatasi (35) helped Samoa to a competitive 7-205 from their 50 overs.

The Monday hero for Samoa, captain Ben Mailata, again stepped up taking two early wickets to leave Fiji reeling at 2-5 in the fifth over. However, Fiji’s experience and depth shone through with an 84-run partnership between Sekove Ravoka (58) and Seru Tupou (70) steering Fiji to a comfortable three-wicket win.

Indonesia recorded their first win of the tournament with a 54-run triumph over Japan, their first victory over Japan in several years. Man of the match Viraj Bhammar (71) struck some lofty blows on the Queen Elizabeth Oval to get Indonesia to 7-210 from their 50 overs.

Japan started well but struggled to match the required run rate as wickets fell at regular intervals to be all out for 156 in the 46thover.

The six teams are competing for a position in the ICC’s World Cricket League Division 5.

The ICC is delivering the tournament in partnership with the City of Greater Bendigo and with support from the Victorian Government through the Significant Sporting Events Programme.
