The lack of communication has been identified as one of the major problems in northern rural health centres.

In an interview with the Assistant Minister for Health and Medical Services, Alex O’Connor, this was one of the issues that had been identified that needed urgent attention.

Mr O’Connor, who is currently touring all the health facilities in the Northern Division, said communication was important especially in their line of work where it deals with people’s lives.

“There are certain issues that have been identified, first and foremost is communication, in some places the means provided to cater for this are not working,” Mr O’Connor said.

“Even Radio Telephones (RT), the equipments are in good condition but there is no signal.

“Cell-phones in some of these areas are unable to send or receive calls because there is no service.”

He said he would be liaising with service providers about this issue so they could address it together upon his return to Suva.

“I need to get back and talk to those at the head office and find out the best solution. We will talk with the Telecom Fiji, Digicel and Vodafone and find out ways we can better facilitate this particularly with this ministry as we are dealing with people’s lives,” he said.

Mr O’Connor and his team conclude their tour tomorrow.
