Jitendra Singh welcomes new Agriculture Assistant Minister

The senior management and staff of the Ministry of Agriculture officially welcomed the new Assistant Minister for Agriculture Viam Pillay at the Ministry’s headquarters on Wednesday.

Ministry of Agriculture, Permanent Secretary, Jitendra Singh, while welcoming the Assistant Minister said that the Ministry was fortunate to acquire the service and leadership skills of Mr Pillay.

“The Ministry looks forward to your guidance on service delivery to farmers in particular, given your strong sense of community work and advocacy in a wide range of areas,” Mr Singh said.

Mr Pillay has served the community as a social worker for 22 years. He has a passion for community development and service to the people.

Prior to entering politics, Mr Pillay was frequently called upon to speak at community based gatherings and various events on youth and environmental issues, disaster management and voter awareness programmes around his community.

Mr Pillay, who is also the chairperson of the Standing Committee on Social Affairs in Parliament, looks forward to working closely with the farmers, staff of the Ministry and the various stakeholders.

“I will make sure that things are done in a right way.

“I look forward to working with the agriculture stakeholders as well  as advancing policies that will be beneficial for all Fijians   in the sector,” said Mr Pillay.

The Ministry also bid farewell today to the outgoing Assistant Minister for Agriculture, Joeli Cawaki.

Mr Cawaki has made a significant contribution towards the development of the agriculture sector during his four years of service as the Assistant Minister. He continues as the Assistant Minister for National Disaster Management and Rural and Maritime Development.
