The chairperson of the Electoral Commission, Suresh Chandra, has announced details of the Pacific Islands Voter Registration Drive, in the lead up to the 2018 General Election.

“Under the Constitution and the Electoral (Registration of Voters) Act 2012, every Fijian who has attained the age of eighteen [18] is eligible to register and vote.

“Therefore, the Fijian Elections Office is conducting the registration of voters in countries outside of Fiji to allow all such eligible Fijians to register.”

Five registration teams from the Fijian Elections Office [FEO] will be registering eligible Fijians from Friday, March 17 until Friday, April 7, 2017 at multiple locations across Tonga, Samoa, Cook Islands, Niue, Nauru, Kiribati, Marshall Islands, Tuvalu, Papua New Guinea, Solomon Islands and Vanuatu.

“The FEO has confirmed that it has finalised plans to conduct registrations in the listed countries.

“I strongly urge all eligible Fijians to come forward and take advantage of the voter services that will be available through these teams,” said Mr Chandra.

The registration drive will include registering first time eligible Fijian voters, updating of voter registration details, issuing replacements for lost Electronic Voter Registration [EVR] cards as well as information sessions.

As has been the practise of the FEO, eligible Fijians will be required to produce a valid Fijian passport in order to register.

Final details of the registration drive will be published by the FEO in the daily newspapers in Fiji and the countries concerned.
