Murder! Naidu Gets Life In Prison

He has to serve a minimum term of 17 years before a release may be considered.

A fisherman convicted for the murder and robbery of an elderly woman was yesterday sentenced to life imprisonment by the High Court in Suva.

Sudesh Mani Naidu, 40, entered the home of 74-year-old Vidya Wati in Lautoka in 2013, assaulted the elderly woman and stole $2200 worth of assorted jewellery.

Ms Wati later succumbed to her injuries and died in hospital.

High Court judge Justice Salesi Temo overturned the unanimous not guilty opinion of the assessors and convicted Sudesh Mani Naidu last week for both counts.

Justice Temo sentenced Sudesh Mani Naidu to the mandatory sentence of life imprisonment with a minimum term of 17 years to be served before release may be considered. Naidu has 30 days to appeal.
