Fiji men’s hockey coach, Hector Smith Snr wants the team to improve on their ranking in the second round of the Hockey World League in Dhaka, Bangladesh.

Smith told SUNsports doing that could mean their qualification to next year’s Commonwealth Games in Gold Coast, Australia.

Before flying out of the country tomorrow, the national men’s hockey side presented their i-tatau to the President Major General (Ret’d) Jioji Konrote at State House, Suva yesterday.

The wily coach said that he’s anticipating their first match as the players have been prepared well.

“I’m feeling excited and anxious to get our first game underway. The aim of our competition is to improve our ranking so we can participate in the Commonwealth Games.”

Despite having young players in the side, Smith says, they have maintained their best conduct.

“There are nine under-21 boys in the team and they all have attended training and I think we are taking a bunch of disciplined players who come from very steady and supportive family background.”

Team manager Jone Tuiipelehaki is hopeful that the games would provide a good opportunity for the players to get more exposure and produce better results.

The Fiji men’s hockey side are currently ranked 51 in the World Series while in the Commonwealth, they are ranked 18.
