Crossing the Waidina River will no longer be a struggle for students and villagers of Nauluvatu in Naitasiri.

Thanks to Government, they now have an outboard engine that will equip their village boat to transport them across the river with ease.

For decades, the villagers have been crossing the Waidina River using bamboo rafts.

Yesterday, the Minister for Women, Children and Poverty Alleviation, Mereseini Vuniwaqa, handed over a 15-horsepower outboard engine.

“The Government’s main concern is providing quality education to our children. The engine will help in the transportation of school students to the other end of the river bank,” she said.

Mrs Vuniwaqa highlighted the importance of providing quality education and urged parents and villagers to be more supportive of their children, making sure that they succeed in life.

Villager Manasa Bulai said for years they have been crossing the Waidina River and it would take time to reach the other side.

“Today is a glorious day for us and we are grateful to the government for their concerns towards us that live at the highland,” he said.

The president for the village women association, Vitalina Seru, said: “It takes our children at least 30 minutes trying to row to the other side but now it will be just a two to three minutes boat ride.

“This is the only route to the main road and to other places.”

The village is home to more than 300 people, with more than 60 students.
