4 Alleged Gang Rapes In Month

The following data is authorised for release by the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) and relates to the number of formal indictments (Information) filed in the High Courts of Fiji by the Director of Public Prosecutions throughout the month.

This data is confined to incidents of serious sexual offences only.

There were 30 people charged with a total of 54 separate incidents in February. The offences were rape (45), assault with intent to rape (6) and sexual assault (3).

There were 24 victims of the 54 separate incidents of which 14 victims were under the age of 18-years-old.

There was one incident of rape where the accused is a 72-year-old uncle and the victim was his 12-year-old niece.

The youngest victim was a six-year-old boy and the accused was his 65-year-old grandfather.

The youngest accused person was a 12-year-old boy and the victim was also 12-years-old.

There were four separate incidents of alleged gang rapes and the victims were 12 years, 19 years, 20 years and 22-years-old.

Of these four alleged gang rapes, one of the victims was a tourist.

There were nine incidents where the victims were related to the accused persons.

One case was withdrawn after a discontinuance (Nolle Prosequi) was filed.
