The Navy rugby team walked out of Subrail Park in Labasa yesterday $250 richer and the Bougainville Tanoa.

Navy received the title from Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama after defeating Bainivualiku 24-16.

Navy team trainer/assistant coach Saiasi Moceica was satisfied with the performance.

“We played well but we could have done better,”Moceica said.

“We need to work on a lot of areas before our next match in Lautoka.”

Bainivualiku coach Iosefo Tamanisaqarua said it was good match.

“I am satisfied with the performance of our players,” Tamanisaqarua said.

“If we had more time surely we would have won.”

Commander of the Republic of Fiji Military Forces, Commodore Viliame Naupoto also watched the match.

“It is good to bring rugby to Vanua Levu where the people can enjoy watching and the players get a chance to play,” Commodore Naupoto said.

Opeti Utoni, 30, of Nasolo in Bua playing for the Bainivualiku team was awarded the best player of the match.

What happened

Mesu Navakayala of Navy scored the first try while Sosi Daugunu of Bainivualiku bridged the gap with a penalty.

Paula Tuvou extended Navy’s lead with a penalty before kicked his second penalty.

 

Halftime: Navy 10-6 Bainivualiku

Tuvou scored a try which was converted and Daugunu kicked his third penalty.

Radaniva Ravulo of Navy scored the last try for his side before Bainivualiku halfback Utoni scored the only try for his side.

Fulltime: Navy 24-16 Bainivualiku
